International Panel Judges
Group Finance Director, Oceana Limited
Imraan Soomra is a Chartered Accountant, CA(SA) and completed the Harvard Programme for Leadership Development. He has been Group Financial and Executive Director of Oceana Limited, a dual listed JSE and Namibian (NSX) exchange company since July 1, 2013 where he has been instrumental in managing the group’s game-changing ZAR 4.6 billion acquisition of the US based Daybrook Fisheries, helping it become the world’s 6th-biggest fishing company and Africa’s largest.
Imraan received the CFO South Africa’s Transformation and Empowerment Award 2015 for his role as a change agent at Oceana in reshaping the culture and structure and successfully launching a shared services project. Previously, he served as CFO of Mnet & Supersport, Financial Director of Netcare’s Hospital Division, Financial Manager of Nampak and Audit Manager at Deloitte & Touche. He also served as Head of finance and operations for the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup Bid Committee where he was part of the team instrumental in securing this global event for South Africa.
Why did we select Imraan to serve on our international panel of judges?
Imraan is an experienced executive with significant track record at the global level, leading finance teams and helping CEOs/Boards drive group strategy. He is a change agent with skills to direct a multinational facing significant threats and weaknesses in a very competitive industry. Our case company, MCOM Mobile Telecommunications seeks to acquire a global rival as the board searches for growth. Imraan’s role in the recent completion of Oceana’s acquisition of US-based Daybrooks Fisheries puts him in a unique position to judge how the teams grapple with whether or not MCOM should enter a key market and if to do so via an acquisition or organic entry.
Furthermore, Oceana’s current strategy is to diversify at the product and country level due to size and political risk and our case company, MCOM has some serious scale, scope and political risk challenges that required a seasoned global market operative, grounded in finance to help evaluate how the teams respond. Imraan brings these credentials very strongly to the panel and as such we were only too humbled by his agreement to serve.
